History & Background

Hutongs are narrow alleyways formed by lines of traditional courtyard residences (siheyuan). Dating back to the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368), Beijing once had over 7,000 hutongs. Today, about 1,000 remain, offering a living glimpse into old Beijing's community life and architecture.
