History & Background

Constructed in 1420 during the Ming dynasty, the Temple of Heaven was where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties performed annual ceremonies of prayer to Heaven for good harvests. The complex covers 273 hectares, nearly four times the size of the Forbidden City, and is a masterpiece of Chinese architectural symbolism and geometry.
