History & Background

Built in 652 AD during the Tang dynasty, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda was constructed to house Buddhist sutras and figurines brought back from India by the monk Xuanzang. The seven-story pagoda stands at 64m and is a symbol of Xi'an's role as a center of Buddhist learning. Xuanzang's 17-year journey to India inspired the classic novel "Journey to the West."
