History & Background

Sera Monastery, founded in 1419 by Jamchen Chojey, was once home to over 7,000 monks. It is one of the "great three" Gelugpa university monasteries of Tibet. The monastery is famous for its daily monk debates held in the courtyard every afternoon, where monks engage in philosophical discussions using hand claps and gestures.
